Planning for our 7th Annual Guardian Angel Golf Scramble is underway!

The time has come for us to plan for the 7th Annual Grayson County Children's Advocacy Center Guardian Angel Golf Scramble. Last year's tournament was an overwhelming success, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the players, sponsors and volunteers again for your involvement. Without community partners like you, the Advocacy Center would not be able to continue to provide a safe place for children to tell their stories of abuse and neglect and begin the healing process. The Advocacy Center is a non-profit organization that is dependent upon grants and donations from people in the community that share our commitment to stopping child abuse in this county.
This year the tournament has been slated for October 5, 2012 at the Grayson County College Golf Course. Once again lunch and beverages will be provided as well as drawings for fabulous prizes. Last years players and sponsors were important partners in making the tournament successful, and we would like to ask both returning and first-time players/sponsors to join us again. National Child Abuse Prevention Month

Since 1983, April has been designated as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. During the month, child abuse and neglect awareness activities are promoted all across the country. One such program, the Blue Ribbon Campaign to Prevent Child Abuse, was launched in 1989 as a Virginian grandmother's tribute to her grandson who died as a result of child abuse. People are encouraged to wear blue ribbons during April as well as wearing blue on Fridays as a reminder that child abuse is a very real and serious problem must be prevented.

Here at the Grayson County Children's Advocacy Center, that is the message we strive to communicate every day, and we encourage the community to join us. "April is a time to celebrate the important role that communities play in protecting children," says Executive Director Martha Nuckols. "Everyone's participation is critical. Focusing on ways to promote the five  protective factors, in every interaction with families, is the best thing our community can do to strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect." We can all play a part in strengthening families to end the cycle of abuse. By ensuring that parents have the knowledge, skills and resources they need to care for their children, we can help prevent child abuse.

As a part of Child Abuse Prevention Month, various local restaurants have teamed up with the Grayson County Children's Advocacy Center for the cause, so on select days, a portion of the restaurants' proceeds will be donated to the CAC. Come support the Children's Advocacy Center by joining us for a meal at any of the participating restaurants this month. Visit our website at www.cacgc.org or find us on Facebook (Grayson Advocacy-Center) to view the calendar of what days you can dine and donate, and remember to mention the "Grayson County Children's Advocacy Center".

Tragic Events of Pennsylvania State

The Tragic Events unfolding at Penn State serve to emphasize the sexual abuse perpetrated on children across the United States. However, what has happened at Penn State is not a unique situation. The Grayson County Children's Advocacy Center sees over  400 children each year. Most of these children have been sexually abused by someone they know and trust, many times a family member. What is really sad is that we know that this is only the tip of the iceberg.
  • 1 in 4 girls will be sexually abused before her 18th birthday, as will 1 out of 6 boys, but only 1 in 10 will tell someone.
  • Professionals who suspect abuse make a report to CPS or law enforcement only 30% of the time.
While the law in Pennsylvania is more vague in who must report abuse, Texas law is not the least bit vague. In Texas, any adult is a mandated reporter, which means anyone suspecting child abuse must report to CPS or law enforcement. It's our responsibility to protect the children in our community. In view of what's happening at Penn State, let's take this opportunity to work together to protect our children.
The CAC offers training programs at no cost to groups of adults in our community to help them understand how to recognize abuse and their responsibilities in reporting. If you know a school group, church group or other organizations who will work with children on a regular basis that would benifit from this training, please refer them to us at 903-957-0440.
